Battle of the brands: Primers - Too Faced Shadow Insurance vs. Urban Decay Primer Potion

Don't forget to enter my blog giveaway! Click here to enter now! Open until January 25, 2012.

In case you don't know, I'm a HUGE fan of Urban Decay's Primer Potion. I have been using this eye primer for years! Even when they still had their old packaging which pissed of the entire beauty world, I've never turned away from their product. It's such an amazing product & has totally changed the way I look at eyeshadow. I don't mind coughing up the $19 for it. I say it's worth every penny. Eyeshadows can be very pricey these days so I say you protect your investment & get the best out of it. Everyone wants vibrant, long wearing & crease-less eyeshadows & primer potion seems to get the job done.

Along came Too Faced Shadow Insurance which is a similiar product. I've been hearing so much about this product. I never cared to try it because first off, I have a ton of primer potion. A little goes a long way so a tube will nearly last you forever. Secondly, why fix it if it's not broken? I mean, I'm happy with my primer potion so why change that, right? WRONG!

First of all, let's talk a little more about the products.

Urban Decay Primer Potion:
$19 | 0.37 oz.
Description:
Packaged in a new squeeze tube with a precise needle nose, these bestselling primer potions glide effortlessly onto the skin providing the ultimate eye prep for smoother, more vibrant shadow and all-day, creaseless wear. The original, award-winning formula disappears completely when applied—ideal for the purist who wants a straightforward primer. Eden, Greed, and Sin work triple-duty as primers, highlighters, or eye shadows. If you want to avoid shimmer, Eden provides a matte, nude wash of color. Greed and Sin both feature a sensual shimmer that makes eyes pop. Formulated in an array of textures, the shades in this line truly offer something for everyone.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance:
$18 | 0.35 oz.
Description:
This is your full-coverage insurance policy against all fading, creasing, melting, blurring, oil slicked, and hard-to-blend eyeshadow accidents. Our silicone based eyeshadow primer transforms any eyeshadow into a perfectly blendable, color-drenched, intensified version of itself, then locks it down perfectly until you take it off. This soothing formula evens out the skintone on your lids and smoothes lines while securing a barrier between the oils of your skin and your makeup, so no shadow catastrophes will ever happen again.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
- Parabens
- Sulfates
- Synthetic Fragrances
- Synthetic Dyes
- Petrochemicals
- Phthalates

I must say that anything Paraben free is already a winner in my book. Long story short, if you don't know what Parabens are, well, it's chemicals found in products used as preservatives & is linked to breast cancer. So thumbs up to Too Faced for formulating their product without parabens :D

What I love about both brands is that they're PETA APPROVED! I cannot stress how much I love the thought that they do not test on animals :)

So my curiosity got to me the other day & while it was slow at work I proceeded to conduct an experiment of my own. My co-workers always rave about Too Faced Shadow Insurance so I decided to see which primer was the best. I cannot believe that the shadows I swatched showed up much more vibrant on top of Too Faced instead of Urban Decay! I was shocked! I then went around to my co-workers & asked them to pick out which shadows looked better without telling them what primers I had on. They all picked the shadows that were swatched on top of Too Faced.

I found that Too Faced also went on smoother & it was much easier to apply the shadows. There was absolutely no tugging & it was very blendable. Color pay off was definitely amazing & much more vibrant. There was a huge difference. The shadows swatched on Urban Decay were less pigmented & appeared a bit patchy. I wish I had photos of those exact swatches :(

I have a few photos but these are not the best. As always, things appear better in person than in photos.

I love that Urban Decay has finally changed their packaging. Cutting open a bottle of UDPP was so not the business. And after putting all the product in a seperate jar, it would dry up quicker than usual so that was a total waste of money.

Both brands have amazing packaging. I am loving the squeeze tubes. So easy to dispense & better product control.

As you can see, they look almost identical to eachother. They both have a nude color to them & applies sheer to the eyelids when blended out. However, TFSI is a bit more sheer & like I said it applies evenly & much more smooth.

While on the other hand UDPP is much more opaque & would neutralize the eyelids a little more than TFSI.

And now onto the swatches. You won't really notice a huge difference in the photos but in person there is definitely a difference. In this photo I used MAC's Firecracker eyeshadow.

I also played around with different finishes so you could see the difference. So I have MAC's Humid eyeshadow which is a Frost finish, MAC's Plumage which is Matte & MAC's Melon pigment. I think that TFSI gives a slightly better color pay off & smoother consistency. The colors also appear truer to life. What do you think?

So the famous question will probably be "Will you be switching from Urban Decay to Too Faced?"

Haha to be honest I have a lot of primer potion on my hands. I think I'll definitely use up what I have then switch over. I'm not here to bash any of these brands because I love them both. This is just my honest opinions on these products. Some may agree & some may not, It's all good. I would love to hear your guys feedback though! Shoot me a comment & let me know what you think. What is your favorite eyeshadow primer?

I think I've always likes the Too Faced Shadow Insurance better than Urban Decay. Ever since I bought the Aromaleigh loose shadow, I four that Too Faced made the colour pop so much more vibrantly than Urban Decay :D and it came with better packaging in that time ;)

So tempted to get my hands on the TFSI primer now .. *___*

Do you have any recommendations for good (affordable) eyeshadow primers? I've gotten my hands on ONE UD primer potion (through a swap), and a shimmery NYX & ELF primer (both of which do almost nothing and ruin the eyeshadows i want to use).

Jen: The Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoos make awesome bases! They are colored bases though.

If the cheap primers don't make a difference in your eyeshadow then I suggest that you invest in a high end one. Too Faced or Urban Decay is great!

I will be doing a review & swatches on the maybelline color tattoos sometime this week so be sure to check back :)
